The FBI confirmed Sunday that two FBI agents were killed in a training accident off the coast of Virginia.

Christopher Lorek, 41, and Stephen Shaw, 40 -- both members of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, an elite team in Quantico, Va -- were killed Friday.

The FBI has not yet released details of their deaths, only stating that the cause of their deaths is "under review," USA Today reported.

The FBI said their deaths did not involved gunfire, according to the Washington Post.

An anonymous source told CNN that the two were killed in a hostage rescue training exercise.

The two were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital via helicopter following the accident.

"We mourn the loss of two brave and courageous men,'' FBI Director Robert S. Mueller said in a statement. "Like all who serve on the Hostage Rescue Team, they accept the highest risk each and every day, when training and on operational missions, to keep our nation safe. Our hearts are with their wives, children, and other loved ones who feel their loss most deeply. And they will always be part of the FBI Family."

Lorek joined the FBI in 1996. He is survived by y his wife and two daughters, 11 and 8. Shaw joined in 2005 and is survived by his wife, a daughter, 3, and a 1-year-old son.

FBI spokeswoman Kathleen Wright of the agency's headquarters in Washington D.C. declined to comment.
