The 2013 Scion FR-S and its twin Subaru BRZ have not only managed to impress auto enthusiasts for its driving prowess, today the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced that the sports cars are Top Safety Pick certified as well.
In a frontal collision test, the IIHS determined that the occupant's survival space has been well maintained after impact with virtually no intrusion into the driver's area. The Toyobaru sports cars all offer frontal and side airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock braking systems, and daytime running lights.
Joining the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ on the list of Top Safety Picks are the 2013 Ford Escape Crossover and 2013 Acura ILX compact luxury sedan as well.
The 2013 Ford Escape managed to score top marks in every single test conducted and has proven the dramatic safety improvements accomplished in its redesign. Previous generation 2009-2011 Ford Escapes scored a mere "marginal" rating for vehicle roof strength, making occupants especially vulnerable in roll-over situations.
Finally, the 2013 Acura ILS has done exceptionally in all categories save for one tiny fault: the driver's right shin bone is vulnerable to leg injuries due to forces transferred into the driver footwell during impact.
