GT500 nurburgring
The 2014 Shelby GT500 lapped the Nurburgring. Ford

Ford never released the official lap time of the Shelby Mustang GT500 around the Nurburgring. However, given the staggering time released by Chevrolet's Camaro Z/28 two weeks ago, speculations on the GT500 has been on mind of Pony car fans. Finally, a new video by SVT Performance of a GT500 lapping the Nurburgring has been released on Tuesday.

Don't be mistaken--the video from SVT Performance is not recognized by Ford and does not represent the official Nurburgring lap time. That said, the in-car footage from the 2014 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500, definitely looks like a hot lap and the driver of the GT500 really knows how to shred the infamous track.

According to the SVT Performance video, the 2014 Shelby Mustang GT500 lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes 39.28 seconds. If the time accurately reflects the GT500's ability, then we are disappointed to report that it is no match for the Camaro Z/28. Two weeks ago, we learned the new street legal track car from the Bowtie brand took just 7 minutes 37.47 seconds to finish a lap of the nurburgring, a solid 1.81 seconds faster than the supercharged Shelby.

Many variables are responsible for the lap times on both cars. While 1.81 seconds might seem like a lot for most circuits, an extra second can easily be found simply by selecting a higher performing set of sports tires.
