Since rumors about Prince William’s alleged affair with Rose Hanbury surfaced in February, there have been talks about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge possibly divorcing soon. While everything about the cheating scandal is purely hypothetical as of now, a divorce is not an impossibility once the alleged secret affair is confirmed. Here are the things that will happen once Prince William and Kate Middleton decide to split.

The royal family might gift Kate a new residence

Even if they split, Kate will still need Prince William’s permission before he can bring their children outside of the U.K. Instead of moving out of the country, it’s possible that Kate will stay in the U.K. and live in an apartment gifted by the royal family, just as Sarah Ferguson lived in an apartment after her divorce from Prince Andrew.

Kate will receive financial support from Prince William

After their divorce, Kate will receive financial support from her ex-husband. The amount she will receive from Prince William will depend on the length of their marriage. Princess Diana also received compensation from Prince Charles after their split.

Queen Elizabeth will decide on Kate’s post-divorce title

Queen Elizabeth will decide whether or not Kate will retain her title after her divorce from Prince William. The Queen is expected to be greatly involved in the divorce process, just as how she was greatly involved in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s. Back then, she was the one who decided if Princess Diana could retain her title after the divorce.

In the case of Princess Diana, the Queen decided to allow her to be called Her Royal Highness Princess Diana after the divorce, but Prince Charles rejected the idea and said that she must only be called Princess Diana. Queen Elizabeth can also decide if she wants to strip the Duchess of Cambridge of all her titles.

Unwanted media attention will be worse

After Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s split, the paparazzi attention given to them went too ugly to handle. If Prince William and Kate divorce, the media attention will probably be just as worse.

They may remarry but not under the Church of England

Since Queen Elizabeth also heads the Church of England, remarrying under the same church may not be a good idea for either Kate or Prince William. Most likely, they will remarry outside the church and lose all the titles associated with their former marriage altogether.
