Amelia Bambridge, a 21-year-old solo British traveler, who hails from Worthing in Sussex has been reported missing after she failed to return to and to check-out of her hostel in Cambodia. Bambridge was last seen on the island of Koh Rong during the early hours of Thursday morning. It has been five days since her disappearance and the police have not been able to make any headway. As of now, here is what we know.
1. Six Men Were Questioned Then Released
The police have already questioned more than 20 people, but unfortunately, no arrests have been made - there was, however, particular interest in six men who work at restaurants, guesthouses, and hotels. They were brought in after several Western tourists complained about their poor behavior towards other female visitors. The men were later on released.
2. Amelia’s Bag Was Found
The police were able to locate Bambridge’s bag on the police beach. It was placed on a rock near the water’s edge and still had her money, phone, and bank cards. Her passport was later found in the hotel room where she was residing.
3. She Was Online Before Disappearing
After the police went through Amelia’s phone, it was found that she posted photos online until 3:23 AM, but after that, there was no activity. The search for the missing solo traveler has now expanded to nearby islands with almost 150 volunteers from the navy, police force, and local community. Even fishermen and neighboring provinces have been informed.
4. Amelia’s Father Fears Abduction
Amelia’s mother, Linda Schultes, her father, Phil Bambridge and her brother Harry Bambridge have traveled to Cambodia to help the authorities with the search. Her father fears abduction. He said to Sky News, “I think someone’s taken her. I don’t think she’s had an accident. If she’d had an accident, she would have been found by now.”
5. The Police Suspect She Drowned
Contrary to what the Bambridge family believes, the local police force think that she may have drowned. According to Major General Chuon Narin, the police chief for Preah Sihanouk province, Amelia "may have drowned in the sea because we have found her belongings on a rock very close to the edge of the sea." Despite this though, the Bambridge family is looking into hiring a team of professional jungle searchers to continue the search inland.
