MIAMI - Renowned Cuban-American television judge and breast cancer survivor Ana María Polo joined the Big Wig campaign of Susan G. Komen, bringing her influential voice to the forefront of the fight against breast cancer.

Known for her dynamic role in the hit show "Caso Cerrado," Polo aims to leverage her substantial media presence and personal experience to heighten awareness and emphasize the importance of early detection, particularly within the Latina community. She is also raising money to support Susan G. Komen's organization.

This initiative marks a significant step in her ongoing advocacy for breast cancer awareness and support, resonating with her own triumphant battle against the disease. Polo's participation is expected to inspire and educate, furthering the campaign's mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.

La Doctora Polo, the breast cancer survivor

Ana María Polo has been a beacon of hope and inspiration for many. Born on April 11, 1959, in Havana, Cuba, Polo's journey is nothing short of remarkable. Migrating to Miami at the tender age of two and later moving to Puerto Rico, Polo's early life was marked by a rich cultural exposure, evident in her participation in musicals like "Godspell," "Jubilee," and "Show Boat."

Her professional ascent began with a law degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1987, followed by a thriving career as a lawyer, where she specialized in family law, handling cases of divorce, child support, and domestic violence.

Polo's legal acumen and charismatic personality led her to television, where she became a household name as the arbitrator of Telemundo's "Caso Cerrado." This show not only brought her immense popularity but also made history in 2010 when it was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award, a first for a program from a Spanish-language network.

However, it's Polo's personal battles that have deeply resonated with many. In 2003, at 44, she faced a daunting breast cancer diagnosis. Her victorious fight against the disease transformed her into a fervent advocate for cancer awareness, particularly emphasizing the importance of early detection, a message she passionately disseminates through her platforms.

From 'Caso Cerrado' to activism

Polo's involvement with the Susan G. Komen Big Wig campaign aligns perfectly with her life's narrative. As a breast cancer survivor, she understands the struggles and the critical need for awareness and education

"Through the years, I've made it my mission to keep our community informed and educated, especially when statistically, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among Latinas," Polo says in her page on the Susan G. Komen website.

Polo leverages her vast media presence, especially on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, to reach out and connect with her audience, spreading the word about breast cancer awareness and the significance of early detection.
