A daughter killed her father and hanged him from a tree with the help of her lover after he disapproved of their wedding and denied a share in the family property.

The shocking incident took place on July 19 in Sambhal village of India’s Uttar Pradesh.

According to police, the suspects, identified as Preeti and her boyfriend Dharmendra Yadav reportedly struck the victim, 46-year-old Harpal Singh, with an iron rod after getting him drunk.

The farmer was later found hanging from a tree. The death was initially treated as suicide. However, the investigation took a deviation after the autopsy results revealed signs of a murder.

A detailed investigation was initiated after the autopsy results confirmed multiple internal injuries, police said.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that he had gone to take care of his fields on the night of July 19 and did not return home. He was found hanging the next day. On suspicion, the man’s wife had filed a police complaint and the case was taken up," the Times of India quoted the Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP), Chakresh Mishra, as saying.

"A probe was ordered after the autopsy report. It revealed that the man was murdered and his own daughter was the main suspect. She along with her boyfriend and his friend had killed Harpal as he was against her marriage plans and refused to give any property," the officer added.

Police arrested the couple and sent them to jail, the local media reported. A search is underway for a third suspect identified as one Gaurav, who is believed to be absconding. However, it is unclear how the third suspect was involved in the crime.

"A surveillance team had traced contact details of the woman. Multiple calls were made from her phone on the night of July 19 to her accused boyfriend. Teams have been formed to nab the third accused," Rajpura station house officer, Vidyut Goyal, said.

The investigators interrogated the couple during which they confessed to the killing, police said.

A case has been registered under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offense, or giving false information to screen offender), and 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
