Ariel Castro Death Update: Official Report Rules Suicide, Not Sex Act Gone Wrong

It has been concluded that Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro's death was a suicide and not a sex act gone wrong. Castro took his own life by hanging himself in his jail cell and not by accidentally suffocating during an act of autoerotic asphyxiation. Castro took his own life on Sept. 3 having only just begun to serve a sentence of life plus 1000 years. Castro was found hanging by prison guards. The sheet he used to take his own life was attached to the hinge of a window.

Two corrections consultants went over the evidence in Castro's jail cell and released a report on Tuesday that concluded the kidnapper had committed suicide. The Associated Press calls those looking into the hanging "nationally regarded consultants" and say they have rejected the claim the hanging was an accident. It was believed Castro died accidentally during a sex act after it was reported he died with his pants around his ankles. No suicide note was found, which also led to the belief the death was accidental.

The report issued by the consultants reads: "In conclusion, based upon the fact that this inmate was going to remain in prison for the rest of his natural life under the probability of continued perceived harassment and threats to his safety, his death was not predictable on September 3, 2013, but his suicide was not surprising and perhaps inevitable." Based on interviews with other inmates the consultants learned that Castro was being harassed by the prison guards. Inmates interviewed by the consultants said that Castro's pants may have slipped off since he lost ten pounds since beginning his sentence.

In May, three women, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were rescued from Castro's Cleveland home. The three women had spent 10 years as Castro's prisoners. Berry, Knight and DeJesus were kept chained up and repeatedly beaten and raped. Castro fathered Berry's six-year-old daughter, but forcibly miscarried five of Michelle Knight's pregnancies. In May, Berry was able to escape the home with the help of some neighbors. Berry called 911 and named Castro as her kidnapper. When police arrived Knight and DeJesus were taken from the house to the hospital where they were reunited with family.
