The tale of a young woman coming back years later to avenge her father captivated a nation came together Monday through Saturday for 8 months to follow the life of Nina and her wicked step mother Carminha. "Avenida" was an original screenplay developed by João Emanuel Carneiro who proved he was able to unite a country by telling a story that reflected society. "I felt that Brazil's new rising class wasn't so interested in watching more and more shows about the country's super-elite," he told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year. "This new class isn't interested in the values or culture of the rich. They're interested in seeing themselves."

"Avenida Brasil" has aired in many Latin countries and is set to premiere stateside on January 6 at 12 Noon on the Telemundo network. The telenovela was originally set to air in primetime, but in the end the programming director opted to air a re-run of "La Reina del Sur." The children fall in love but are soon seperated when an Argentine couple adopt Rita and take her back to their home country.
