Police in Aurora, Colorado have searched the home of movie theater shooter James Holmes and discovered several disturbing items. Police uncovered a "Batman" mask, violent drawings and a calendar with the day of the shooting marked with what has been described as "a unique symbol." The officers that conducted the search of Holmes' apartment testified on Wednesday during a pretrial hearing. On July 20, 2012 while fans were excitedly watching the latest Chris Nolan "Batman" film Holmes entered the theater with a gun.

While "The Dark Knight Rises" was rolling Holmes began shooting injuring 70 people and killing 12. The hearing was being conducted to see if the material collected from Holmes' apartment could be used as evidence during his trial. The lawyers representing Holmes have admitted that their client is the Aurora theater shooter. However the defense team has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges of murder brought against Holmes. The prosecution is looking to hit Holmes with the death penalty and must prove he was sane when the shooting took place.

During Wednesday's hearings there was no testimony to state the significance of the items found in the apartment. Prosecutors are looking to use the evidence being contested in hearings all this month to poke holes in Holmes' insanity plea. FBI agent Leslie Kopper testified about the calendar found in the apartment as well as the Batman mask. The federal agent did not describe the "unique symbol" that marked the date of the shooting. A detective from Aurora also testified about a spiral notebook found in the defendant's home.

The notebook was described as containing violent drawings depicting a serial killer. Detective Thomas Wilson testified that the notebook a drawing of "some kind of maze game involving a serial killer." There are also reports that Holmes sent a notebook filled with violent images to a psychiatrist before he carried out the shootings. Other evidence presented at the pretrial hearing include statements Holmes made following his arrest as well as bank records, computer records and receipts that suggest Holmes purchased weapons and explosive material.
