Broadwalk Empire
"Boardwalk Empire" premieres for its fifth and final season on HBO in September. HBO

The fifth and final season of “Boardwalk Empire” is steadily approaching, and with the iconic HBO series coming to an end, does that also mean the end for Nucky Thompson? Well judging by the latest teaser trailer—yes. The video which is cleverly titled “One is the Loneliest” features Nucky alone with his life’s work, Atlantic City. But in addition to the sparkling lights and bubbling champagne, an ominous message is showcased at the center of this raucous series, “All Empires Fall.” Say it isn’t so.

Season 5 of “Boardwalk Empire” is getting the time jump treatment, the season will pick up seven years later after Season 4 concluded, meaning that the characters on the historically based series will be suffering through the Great Depression in 1931. In a recent interview, Michael K. Williams who portrays Chalky White on the series revealed the interesting time jump, admitting, "The storyline has jumped seven years, which is why I have the beard now. The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone."

Chalky White
In the Season 4 finale episode “Farewell Daddy Blues” Chalky White’s daughter Maybelle White was viciously gunned down at the Onyx Club. Now in Season 5 her father is hell bent on evening the score with Dr. Narcisse. HBO

While Williams revealed the time jump, Steve Buscemi who plays “Boardwalk Empire’s” main protagonist, Nucky Thompson stated that while the series is most certainly coming to an end, even he doesn’t know how it’s going to end. Buscemi told “Late Night” host Seth Meyers that the ending of the series is “bittersweet,” but “is excited to see how they're going to wrap it up." He also joked the writers at HBO have kept the finale of the series under wraps, admitting, "I mean they don't really tell me anything."
