Brad Pitt has been sober for a while now, but there was a time when he was an alcohol addict and it was taking a toll on him both personally and professionally. The actor opened up about his struggles in a recent interview and discussed how important it is for people to share they have inside to overcome it.

In a recent interview, Pitt admitted that things with his alcohol addiction had gone really bad, and he had taken this addiction as far as he could, Yahoo reported. He finally decided to quite alcohol and join an AA group to help get the support he needed.

Going to these AA meetings, Pitt was shocked to see how people were able to honestly talk about the problems in their lives, something which he had never seen before in his life. When it came to him talking about his problems, the actor said that the experience of sharing the “ugly” side of his life was “freeing.” “ There’s great value in that,” he added.

Pitt pointed out that everyone carries “pain, grief and loss” inside. People tend to spend a long time hiding these feelings, but they don’t go away. The actor said that it is important to “open up these boxes.”

The AA group meetings were personally helpful for Pitt at a time when he was admittedly going through some “family stuff,” which is a reference to him splitting from his then wife Angelina Jolie.

Pitt married Jolie in 2014, but the two of them split in September 2016. Since the split, the actor became serious about getting his life back together. In a previous interview with GQ he revealed that he replaced alcohol with Cranberry juice and fizzy water, and he joked that he had the “cleanest urinary tract in all of L.A.”
