Earlier this month, KRON4-TV reporter Stanley Roberts was doing a “People Behaving Badly” segment on illegal dumping in Oakland, California. Roberts interviewed several people, but it was one man specifically that caught his attention. His name was Marcus Malone and he claimed to be an original member of Carlos Santana’s band. "At one time," Malone told Roberts during the segment, "I was with the Santana band, the original Santana blues band. I'm homeless and on the streets because I got in some trouble that put me in jail, I lost everything."

The reporter was a little skeptical at first, but after digging deeper, he found out Marcus was telling the truth and he was a percussionist with the Santana Blues Band before it played Woodstock in 1969. Meanwhile, after seeing the special, Santana tried to track Malone down, but after unsuccessful results, he contacted the news station and the reporter, and together they found Marcus again, creating a sweet moment between two old friends separated by time and some unfortunate incidents. "That's him man. That's magnificent Marcus Malone," Santana said when he saw his old friend. "His spirit is indomitable."

"You don't know how afraid I am to let you see me," Malone said after he and Santana embraced. "We cherish you," Santana replied. "It's an honor to be in your presence." Since the story aired, another original member of the Santana Blues Band, percussionist Rod Harper, and producer Bobby Scott also have expressed interest in reuniting with Malone. It seems like the reunion will happen soon, as Santana released a statement saying, "I want to offer my brother Marcus Malone an opportunity to record on the next album with the original band, with Greg Rolie,” the statement began.

“We wrote a song for him called ‘Magnificent Marcus Malone.’ We want him to play on it and we're going to start, Lord willing, in January or February. So I would like to get him some congas so he can get his hands hard again because he hasn't been playing the congas in a while."
