As automakers continue to push technology forward at an unprecedented pace, many automakers have opted to form partnerships to make research and development more cost effective.
One of the more notable partnerships in the industry is the alliance between Renault-Nissan and Daimler, the owner of Mercedes-Benz and Smart. This week, sources involved in the Renault-Nissan and Daimler alliance confirm that the team of engineers have developed two new projects. First, a new turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder gasoline engine will feature new changes that promise to dramatically improved fuel economy figures as well as lower emissions. Secondly, a new automatic transmission will boast fuel-saving upgrades including a new start/stop system as well as "park and shift by wire" technology.

Both the new engine and new transmission are expected to debut in Daimler and Renault-Nissan vehicles by 2016.
Addressing thoughts on the progress of the alliance project, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn commented, "These new components demonstrate how broadly and rapidly our collaboration is proliferating - while all the time remaining rooted in specific projects that give tangible benefits to our customers. The relationship is expanding organically and logically."
Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche added, "The collaboration achieved a milestone this year, with the first vehicles and engines from the partnership now on the roads. Furthermore, all our engineers are keeping an open mind, looking with fresh eyes at all potential new areas of collaboration."
As per the alliance agreements, Daimler will license the new engine and transmissions for Nissan to use in future Nissan and Infiniti models. Nissan subsidiary Jatco will be responsible for manufacturing the gearboxes in its Mexico plant.
We expect more details on Daimler and Renault-Nissan's latest components as the Paris Motor Show continues.
