Fans who are hoping to see “Doctor Sleep 2” will be disappointed to learn that the movie has been cancelled. Director Mike Flanagan, who helmed the first movie, was reportedly working on a sequel, but the low box office numbers may lead to the cancellation of the project.

“Doctor Sleep” got some positive reviews from the critics, and the movie has the support of celebrity horror writer Stephen King, but the low box office numbers could kill the chance of a sequel, Screen Rant reported. Warner Bros. and Flanagan were reportedly working on a sequel after the projections indicated that the flick was going to be the biggest hit this month.

The plot of the movie is an adaptation of King’s novel and it is a sequel to the movie “The Shining,” which is one of the biggest hits in the history of horror flicks. Warner Bros. intended to build up this franchise with more films in the future, but the studio is currently said to be looking at a loss of about $20 million, and chances are that they will not be making more movies as originally planned.

The working title for “Doctor Sleep 2” has been revealed to be “Hallorann.” Warner Bros. reached an agreement with Flanagan to write the script. The plot of the movie was about Overlook Hotel's former cook Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly), a character who has the gift called the Shining.

In what appears to be a last-ditch effort to save the franchise, King and Flanagan have been asking people to help market the movie through word of mouth. However, that is only expected to help Warner Bros. to reduce the loss and not help the studio to order a sequel.

According to Collider, “Doctor Sleep” had an opening weekend collection of $14.1 million. “Midway” emerged as the leading movie in terms of the revenue.
