Reggaeton star Don Omar was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, September 17, after officers responded to a domestic violence complaint at the artist’s home in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. According to officer Maritza Ramos, from the Police’s press office, the events happened around 1:00 a.m., when Don Omar was detained for allegedly threatening his girlfriend, 26, who remains unidentified. Later in the morning, at 5:00 a.m., William Omar Landrón, Don Omar’s real name, was taken to the Comandancia de Bayamón to continue with the proper investigations.

According to EFE, other detainees cheered Don Omar, 36, when he was brought into the police station shackled and appearing unfazed. Police Lieutenant Aimée Alvarado, director of the Domestic Violence division of Bayamón, revealed that this is not the first time Don Omar’s girlfriend has filed a complaint against the singer, and there’s a deeper investigation undergoing. “There have been incidents reported in different dates, with different scenarios,” Alvarado said about Don Omar’s one-year relationship with the unidentified lady.

AP reports that one of Don Omar’s attorneys, Edwin Prado, spoke briefly to reporters and revealed that the artist was surprised by the arrest. "Any type of criminal allegation is detrimental to a public figure," he said. Meanwhile, his publicist, Sujeylee Sola refused to comment on the arrest. Unfortunately, this type of behavior has happened with Don Omar’s previous partners. Just remember the long and tedious divorce from TV personality Jackie Guerrido, after she filed a domestic violence complaint in 2012 and requested a restraining order against Don Omar.

Although Jackie hasn’t spoken publicly about her divorce, which was finalized in 2013, she’s a strong activist against domestic violence and is very involved in helping victims.
