US investigators are trying to find ways to unravel the modus operandi of El Chapo’s criminal sons and the drug kingpin’s beauty queen wife may hold the key.

It appears Emma Coronel is being given a chance to shorter her jail sentence but on the condition that she reveals the secret modus operandi of El Chapo’s sons - Joaquín, Ovidio, Ivan and Jesús Alfredo, also known as “Los Chapitos.”

Should Coronel cooperate, she would be handed a five-year sentence, custody of her twin daughters and be placed under the Witness Protection Program. Her husband is currently serving a life sentence over at a maximums security prison in Colorado.

In June, Coronel pled guilty to collaborating with El Chapo in his billion-dollar drug trafficking empire. This stems from the drugs that were transported – including 450,000 kilos of cocaine, 90,000 kilos of heroin, 45,000 kilos of methamphetamine and almost 90,000 kilos of marijuana.

Several of the Chapitos are already serving sentences across the US for various drug trafficking charges. A raid on the son of Ovido’s house in Mexico was done in October 2019.

Unfortunately, the president ordered his release following a vicious battle between cartels and authorities. That resulted in 14 being shot dead.

As for Coronel, she remains in US Federal custody since being arrested in February at the Dulles International Airport in Virginia. Aside from pleading guilty to collaborating with El Chapo, she also pled the same to money laundering conspiracy and engaging in transactions with a foreign drug trafficker.

She was originally scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 15 but was eventually moved to Oct. 15 after there were objections raised on what had been presented by the prosecution on Friday.

The US Department of Justice appears confident that they will get the necessary information from the 31-year-old Coronel who was given the chance to avoid spending the rest of her life in prison.
