In the United States, June 14 is a very special date. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, or Flag Day. This event happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. However, it wasn’t until 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day, and in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Although it’s not a federal holiday, it is celebrated as a state holiday across the U.S.

The week of June 14 is designated as "National Flag Week." During this week, the president will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the time period. The flag should also be displayed on all government buildings. Some organizations hold parades and events in celebration of America's national flag and everything it represents. The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore, Maryland, birthplace of the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen his famous poem, has celebrated Flag Day since the inception of a museum on the property in 1927.

The annual celebration commemorates the Star-Spangled Banner and its creator Mary Pickersgill. Here are some quotes to commemorate this important day.
