Long overdue, General Motors has confirmed that its Bowling Green, Kentucky, Corvette plant will be preparing the modifications necessary to build the next-generation 'C7' sports car. The announcement was made when GM informed visitors that the public tours in the Corvette plant will be temporarily suspended beginning September 14 to make room for the transition.

A special tour that allows the public to witness how the preeminent America sports car is made, 40,000 to 50,000 visitors flock to Bowling Green each year.

According to the Detroit News, GM's decision to cancel tours is not because production will halt. In fact, the facility will continue operating overtime to meet the continual demand for the current model. However, the retooling process will require some parts of the plant to be completely torn down and reconstructed, likely making the GM plant a slightly more hazardous environment than they'd like to perform tours around. The retooling has also allowed GM to recently hire 100 new workers to assist int he project and GM expects to hire an additional 150 workers in the coming months.

GM has not released any information on the timing of the new car or when it will be revealed. But it's expected to debut as a 2014 model and could be out as early as Detroit's 2013 North American International Auto Show in January.
