2023 Golden Globes
2023 Golden Globes Golden Globes

The list of Nominees is out! The 80th Golden Globe Awards will honor the best in film and American television of 2022, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The 2023 Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday, and the event will be back after a controversial hiatus. It is scheduled to be held on January 10, 2023 from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, with it being aired live on NBC and streamed on Peacock.Jerrod Carmichael will host the ceremony. Father-daughter duo George and Mayan Lopez were originally scheduled to announce the nominations together, but the comedian dropped out after testing positive for COVID-19; he was replaced by Selenis Leyva (Orange is the New Black).

The Globes are clearly hoping for a comeback, after the controversial award show announced it is returning to NBC. Last year, NBC opted not to air the awards, after a Los Angeles Times expose revealed that the (HFPA), the organization responsible for voting on and awarding the Golden Globes—didn’t have a single Black member. Plus It didn’t help that former HFPA president Philip Berk called Black Lives Matter a “racist hate movement.” The same LA Times article also put the organization under fire for its problematic ethical practices and questioned its legitimacy.

Another controversy was the Best Actor in a motion picture nominee, Brendan Fraser, who has been vocal about his accusation against former HFPA president Berk for sexual assault in 2003. When Fraser first made the allegation, the Golden Globes essentially responded by ignoring him. Fraser recently told GQ magazine that he won’t participate in the award show if he is nominated. Other stars, including Top Gun: Maverick’s Tom Cruise, may join Fraser in boycotting the awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The HFPA has announced that they will be introducing four new categories to the ceremony, including Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series/Musical-Comedy or Drama, Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series/ Musical-Comedy or Drama, Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/Anthology or Motion Picture Made for Television and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/Anthology or Motion Picture Made for Television. They have also welcomed 103 new voters (representing 62 countries) to diversify their voting body’s demographics.

This year saw a number of blockbuster’s hit the big screen such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the highly anticipated Avatar 2: The Way of Water. Many indie releases have also made waves with positive reactions from both audiences and critics, such as A24’s Aftersun, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Whale. With 8 nominations, The Banshees of Inisherin takes the lead with the most nominations for film. Everything Everywhere All at Once has the second most noms with 6, and Babylon and The Fabelmans just behind with 5 nominations each.

Here are the 2023 Golden Globes biggest snubs and surprises, and you can find the full list of film and TV nominees below.

5 Biggest SNUBS:

1. Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul):

AMC’s Better Call Saul came to it’s epic conclusion with its sixth season in 2022, and the Breaking Bad spinoff received two nominations at the Golden Globes for Best Drama and Best Actor for Bob Odenkirk. However, his co-star, Rhea Seehorn, was snubbed despite her highly acclaimed performance as Kim Wexler. After giving one of the best TV performances of the year in the incredible final season, Seehorn definitely deserved a nomination for Best TV Actress in a Supporting Role (Comedy/Drama).

2. Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick):

While Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for a Best Picture nom, the lead star himself Tom Cruise was not shortlisted for is return as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The new Top Gun may have nabbed the Best Film Drama nomination, but Cruise himself was snubbed. Considering the movie star gave back his three Golden Globes last year to protest the HPFA, could this be personal?

3. Sarah Polley and Jessica Buckley (Women Talking):

Once again female directors were left out. Not only was the Best Director category entirely male, but female-led films such as The Woman King, and Women Talking were completely left out of the Best Picture Categories. Notable mentions Sarah Polley (director) and rising star Jessie Buckley were both snubbed for their contributions to the drama Women Talking. Sarah Polley, screenwriter and director was not among the best director category. Lead actress, Jessie Buckley, after her surprise Oscar nominations for last year’s The Lost Daughter, has been a rising star but wasn’t nominated for best actress in a drama.

4. Drama Series (Yellowstone)

Kevin Costner was shortlisted for a nomination (Best Actor in a Drama Series), but the not the series itself. Yellowstone was snubbed for Best Television Series in the Drama category.

5. Drama Series (Yellowjackets)

Another popular drama series that missed out on a Best Drama nomination was Yellowjackets. The dramatic survival series has been making the top of everyone's list this year, but the HFPA’s. This could also be due to the season mostly airing in 2021.

5 Biggest SURPRISES:

1. Brendan Fraser (The Whale):

It’s not a surprise that Fraser was nominated for a best actor award, given that he has been favored for acting awards this season. What’s surprising is that he was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama despite being very vocal that he wants nothing to do with the Golden Globes. As previously mentioned Fraser does not want a part of the Awards due to sexual harrasment accusations, stating that he won’t participate in the award show if he is nominated.

2. Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever):

Angela Bassett is a nominee for the Golden Globe Nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. This was a hopeful surprise. Miss Angela Bassett deserves it! She gave an outstanding memorable performance as Queen Romonda in the emotional Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever.

3. Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building):

After Gomez was snubbed while her male co-stars were honored at previous awards, Gomez got the recognition she deserves with her Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Series nom.

4. Ana de Armas (Blonde):

The Marilyn Monroe biopic directed by Andrew Dominik has been so controversial it seemed likely that the film would be left out the 2023 award season. The actress is up against some heavy contenders for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Cate Blanchett, (TÁR), Olivia Colman (Empire of Light), Viola Davis (The Woman King), and Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans).

5. Best TV Comedy or Musical Series/ Jenna Ortega (Wednesday):

While everyone loved Jenna Ortega’s TikTok dance, and the series broke Netflix watch records, we weren’t expecting Netflix’s Wednesday Adams show to get any awards love, much less the Best TV series (musical or comedy) and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Series nominations!

The 80th Golden Globes, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael, will air Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET a on NBC and Peacock.
