Spencer Cox, the governor of Utah, confirmed today that the FBI has a "person of interest under custody" related to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, killed during a special event at the University of Utah.

However, an hour later, the FBI announced the person was released.

Before Fox spoke, FBI director Kash Patel had announced the news on his X (Twitter) account."The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with@fbi

We will provide updates when able."

A little more than an hour later, Patel informed that the person was released.

"The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement. Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency," Patel wrote.

Kirk was on campus for a debate organized by Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University. In the days leading up to his appearance, an online petition urging university leaders to block Kirk from attending drew nearly 1,000 signatures.

Administrators responded with a public statement last week, citing the protections of the First Amendment and underscoring the school's "commitment to free speech, intellectual inquiry, and constructive dialogue."
