“Harry Potter” fans reacted to a recently revealed comment made by J.K. Rowling regarding the relationship between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. According to the author, the two actually had a very passionate, sexual relationship back in their youth.

Dumbledore And Grindelwald’s Steamy Affair

Rowling’s comment was unearthed in a feature included in the Blu-ray DVD “The Crimes of Grindelwald.” In it, the author reportedly said that “Their relationship was incredibly intense,” and it was the type that was sexual in nature.

Perhaps in an attempt to explain why such detail did not make it to the movie, the author also added that she’s not that interested in the sexual aspect of their relationship. “So I’m less interested in the sexual side — though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship — than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationships,” Rowling explained.

“Harry Potter” Fans React

However, many fans reacted negatively to the author’s revelation. Some fans felt that her comment was not necessary at all. For instance, a fan named Hazel Hayes expressed her opinion on Twitter. “I have the exact same reaction to J.K. Rowling trying to retroactively diversify the Harry Potter universe as I do to James Cameron promising four Avatar sequels. Nobody asked for this,” she commented. It was a position agreed to by Twitter user sayna. “[J]k rowling reappearing every 2 months to say something literally no one asked about is me adding more random details to my essay to up my word count,” she wrote.

Rowling is known to be an outspoken LGBTQ rights defender, but some fans wonder why there are no gay characters in her movies. “J.K. Rowling Confirms Some Characters in Her Books and Movies Are Gay Everywhere Except in the Books or the Movies,” Twitter user Eric D. Snider wrote.

Meanwhile, some fans suspect that the author’s comments might be a form of misdirection to avoid real concerns. “After being criticized for glossing over queer characters except in interviews, she reduced calls for real queer rep to ‘give us kinky sex details!’” a user named Exorcizing Emily wrote on Twitter.
