A visibly anguished Chelsea Clinton exited the New York Presbyterian Hospital Monday following an anxious bedside visit with her mother, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, who is suffering from a rare, dangerous blood clot near her brain, the Daily Mail reported. Former President Bill Clinton was also spotted leaving the hospital following the visit.

Details surrounding Hillary Clinton's blood clot remain thin, but doctors have said in a statement that she had a clot in a vein behind her right ear that takes blood away from the brain. The blood clot was reportedly discovered in the wake of a concussion she experienced in early December while she had the stomach flu.

"In the course of a routine followup MRI on Sunday, the scan revealed that a right transverse sinus venous thrombosis had formed," Drs. Lisa Bardack and Gigi El-Bayoumi said. "This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage."

The type of blood clot is rare and can be life-threatening if not caught in time, medical experts told the New York Daily News. If un-treated, the condition can cause pressure to build on the brain and lead to a stroke. Doctors expect Clinton to make full recovery, though.

"The secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery," doctors said to the Daily News. "She is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family and her staff."

Hillary Clinton will be treated with blood thinners and released once doctors establish the proper medication for her, doctors said.

"These are large veins that drain the brain of its blood," said Dr. Alan Boulos, chief of neurosurgery at Albany Medical Center. "It can be life-threatening if the thrombosis is extensive or if the patient doesn't have other channels to drain the brain."

It's still unclear what caused the clot, but according to Boulos, it's unlikely that Clinton's concussion is the culprit. It's rare for head trauma to trigger such problems, he said. The most likely cause is a genetic predisposition, possibly combined with dehydration from the flu.

Doctors continued to assure Tuesday Clinton's condition was not life threatening and said the former First Lady had suffered no brain damage or stroke.

"In all aspects of her recovery, the Secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery," Drs. Lisa Bardack and Gigi El-Bayoumi said.

Following her aggrieved exit from the hospital Monday, a thankful Chelsea Clinton tweeted form her mother's bedside Wednesday.

"Wishing all a healthy & happy 2013," Chelsea, wrote.

"Grateful to be starting the new year with my family."

Hillary Clinton has been absent from the public eye since doctors first diagnosed her with a concussion. She will vacate her position as Secretary of State once John Kerry is confirmed as her replacement.
