In what sounds like the plot of a science fiction movie, a Hispanic astronaut has returned to Earth after being stuck in space for a prolonged period of time due to damages caused to his return ship. The extended mission set a new record for the most time spent in space.

Frank Rubio's latest trip to the stars kept him aboard the International Space Station for 371 days, setting a record for the longest time an American astronaut has spent in space. Rubio is an American astronaut born to Salvadoran parents. He was selected for NASA's Astronaut Group 22 program in 2017 after a decorated military career.

Mark Vande Hei held the previous record with 355 days spent in space.

Originally, Rubio was scheduled to depart the ISS in February of this year, but the return shipping carrying him and two Roscosmos cosmonauts suffered a coolant leak, leaving the three astronauts on the ISS.

During Rubio's prolonged stay in space, NASA said it was able to study the effects of long-duration space missions on the human body, an essential area for NASA as it continues to make advancements to land humans on Mars in the future.

"Frank's record-breaking time in space is not just a milestone; it's a major contribution to our understanding of long-duration space missions," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. "Our astronauts make extraordinary sacrifices away from their homes and loved ones to further discovery. NASA is immensely grateful for Frank's dedicated service to our nation and the invaluable scientific contributions he made on the International Space Station. He embodies the true pioneer spirit that will pave the way for future exploration to the Moon, Mars, and beyond."
