Kate Middleton was extensively criticized by Prince William’s friends before the royal couple tied the knot. Her younger sister, Pippa Middleton, also became a victim of negative comments.
In an article for Vanity Fair, royal author Vicky Ward said that the Duchess of Cambridge was victimized by vicious sniping and snobbish insults from people who were convinced that the royal family should stop marrying those who don’t belong to the aristocracy.
“One likened her and her younger sister, Pippa, 25, to the Bouvier sisters, with their obvious desire to ‘marry well,’” she said. “One member of the young polo-playing set in the county of Gloucestershire — known in the British media as the ‘Glossy Posse’ — noted, ‘Her parents have a tarmac drive, for God’s sake,’” Ward added.
The journalist also said that one acquaintance thought that Prince William’s wife was extremely controlling toward other people. This was proven by the number of friends that Kate and Prince William have.
Meanwhile, royal author Andrew Morton echoed Ward’s statements by saying that Prince William’s friends treated Kate abominably during the early years of their relationship. The mom of three was also aware of the fact that some of Prince William’s friends from different quarters disliked her.
“While she was seen as a ‘pretty and sensible’ girl, there were those in royal and aristocratic circles who believed that the Middletons were too middle-of-the-road for the House of Windsor,” Morton said. “It was felt that she wasn’t from the right stock. William was expected to find a suitable bride among the aristocracy or European royalty — one of his own kind,” he added.
But despite all of the criticisms that the royal couple received, Prince William and Kate still chose to stay together. Shortly after Ward’s article was published in 2008, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tied the knot. In 2010, a beautiful Kate stunned in her Alexander McQueen wedding gown at Westminster Abbey.
Three years after the royal couple’s wedding, Kate and Prince William welcomed their first child, Prince George. Princess Charlotte followed two years later, and Prince Louis was born last year.
