Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle remind many people of Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson when they were still married to Prince Charles and Prince Andrew. However, there is one thing that makes the two sets of royal women different from each other.

Just like Kate and Meghan, Princess Diana and Fergie were also rarely off the front pages when they were still married to Queen Elizabeth’s sons. Their lavish royal weddings and sense of style have also drawn comparisons with the former princesses, but the alleged rift swirling about Kate and Meghan points toward a major difference between the two sets of royal women.

Unlike Princess Diana and Fergie, Kate and Meghan do not seem to share a close relationship with each other. In her 1991 biography titled “Sarah: HRH The Duchess of York,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward revealed how close Princess Diana and Fergie were and how they served as key supports for each other. “Only with the Princess of Wales can she be completely at ease,” she wrote, referring to Fergie.

According to Fergie’s friend Clare Greenall, Princess Diana and Fergie were both in the same position at that time, so they could talk to each other about things they would not mention to anyone else. Princess Diana reportedly helped Fergie more than people gave her credit for. And in return, Fergie was a supportive friend to the Princess of Wales.

“If there is one thing that both women dislike, though, it is being compared with each other but Sarah values her friendship with Diana and the two women remain close,” the source said.

On the contrary, Kate and Meghan’s relationship seem less friendly. Unlike Fergie and Princess Diana, who had been good friends before they became royals, Kate and Meghan did not know each other before their royal lives. Although the two duchesses have recently bonded over motherhood, they are still not half as close as Princess Diana and Fergie were.

It remains to be seen how Kate and Meghan’s relationship will develop over the years. Her friendship with Meghan has just started, so it’s understandable if they don’t display the same level of closeness as Princess Diana and Fergie just yet.
