Madonna has labeled herself as a champion for women, but it seems that she didn’t celebrate the success of Lady Gaga, especially in the beginning. Her former friend, Elton John, recently explained why he thought Madonna was ungracious and nasty.

In his newly released book “Me,” John said that he and Madonna used to be good friends. But things changed after he defended Lady Gaga when he heard Madonna’s comments regarding the “Poker Face” singer’s music.

During her appearance on an American talk show, Madonna said that Gaga’s hit song “Born This Way” was very similar to her track “Express Yourself.” John said that Madonna’s statement made her look ungracious and nasty when she should have taken the comparison as a compliment.

“I think it’s just wrong — an established artist shouldn’t kick down a younger artist right at the start of their career,” John said. But John thought that he was sharing his thoughts about Madonna at that time off the record. He soon learned that his statements were released on television.

Shortly after, Madonna and John’s friendship ended. But the “Candle In The Wind” singer still did his part by apologizing to Madonna.

John also gushed over Gaga by calling the singer the real star of her generation. “She could have a career like Barbra Streisand if she wanted to,” John said. “She’s got the ambition, she’s got the talent coming out of every pore of her body, so it’s up to her whether she wants it and I think she does want it.”

Gaga and Madonna’s feud has long been over. This year, the latter invited the former to the Oscars after-party, and they also posed for photos together. But before they became friends, Gaga and Madonna have both said some harsh things about each other.

In her documentary “Gaga: Five Foot Two,” the “Shallow” singer admitted that Madonna hurt her feelings. Gaga said that she couldn’t fathom the fact that Madonna couldn’t look her in the eye and tell her that she was reductive.

Madonna also said that she never thought that Gaga wanted to steal her crown from her. And the only time she slammed her was when she thought that Gaga ripped one of her songs.
