Prince Charles experienced his first heartbreak at such a young age. And as such, he must have had an idea of how painful separations were before his divorce from Princess Diana.

At the age of 8, Prince Philip decided to send Prince Charles to a boarding school called Cheam. Studying there meant that he could no longer be with the woman he was closest to when he was a kid.

The future king was never close to his parents because the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II were always busy with their royal duties. As such, Prince Charles grew up under the care of his beloved nanny, Mabel Anderson.

In the book “My Husband And I: The Inside Story Of 70 Years Of The Royal Marriage,” royal author Ingrid Seward revealed that Prince Charles wept for days after he was sent to Cheam. The young royal’s heart was broken after he was separated from his beloved nanny.

“His [Charles] first few days as a boarder at Cheam, he would later recall, were the most miserable of his life,” Seward said. Anderson also told the royal author that Prince Charles dreaded going to school every single day.

“Heartbroken, he would write to ‘Mispy’ [Anderson] every day. He used to cry into his letters and say ‘I miss you,’” Seward said. Royal biographer Robert Jobson seconded Seward’s claims by saying that Anderson played a pivotal role in Prince Charles’ life.

“Mabel Anderson was certainly Prince Charles’ rock when he was a young and sensitive child,” he said. “Of course, in a different way, Her Majesty the Queen Mother, The Queen and of course his wife The Duchess of Cornwall are paramount female figures in his life. But Mabel was a key person in his formative years. She was always there for him and he cared for her deeply,” Jobson added.

Meanwhile, Cheam wasn’t the only boarding school that Prince Charles attended. When he got a bit older, Prince Philip decided to send him to Gordonstoun.

The heir to the throne didn’t have a wonderful time at Gordonstoun either. But he reportedly dealt with his loneliness by starring in various school plays.
