Queen Elizabeth II reportedly failed to help Princess Diana save her marriage to Prince Charles. The shocking revelation was mentioned in the documentary “Diana: In Her Own Words.”
During some of the Princess of Wales’ recorded interviews, she detailed the encounter she had with Her Majesty just before she and Prince Charles got divorced. After realizing that her marriage was over, Princess Diana made a last attempt at saving it by reaching out to the monarch.
“So I went to the top lady [Queen Elizabeth II] sobbing,” Princess Diana said. “And I said, ‘What do I do? I am coming to you, what do I do?’ And she said, ‘I don’t know what you should do.’ And that was it, that was the help,” Princess Diana added.
Multiple sources previously revealed that the 93-year-old monarch was not happy about Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles while he was still married to Princess Diana. But even if this were the case, she didn’t meddle in their relationship until after the Princess of Wales’ interview with Panorama was released.
While speaking with Martin Bashir, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom said that there were three of them in her marriage to Prince Charles, that’s why it’s a little crowded. She also said that she didn’t think the heir to the throne was suited to be king.
After learning about the interview, the Queen urged Prince Charles to finalize his divorce from Princess Diana. Her Majesty also wrote a letter to the Princess of Wales informing her that she should just divorce Prince Charles.
“I have consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury and with the prime minister and, of course, with Charles, and we have decided that the best course for you is divorce,” the letter read. Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot in 1981, and their divorce was finalized in 1996.
One year later, Princess Diana moved on with her boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed. The two were vacationing in Paris when they met a tragic car accident and died on the same day.
