Mid-size Car: 2012 Hyundai Sonata
5-Year Ownership Cost: $38,476 MSRP: Starting at $ $19,795Sonata is Hyundai’s best-selling model, and there is a good reason why. The stylish design, one of the best warranty programs (ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain) in today’s market, and an affordable cost – both to buy and to own – would make the customers choose the 2012 Sonata over its competitors. While it is more expensive to purchase than the 2012 Kia Optima, KBB named 2012 Hyundai Sonata to be the cheapest vehicle to own for the initial 5-years among mid-sized cars. The MSRP information is from the company’s website, and it may be different than the data KBB used for calculation. The frequency of recalls have certainly picked up lately and just as we near the end of July, Hyundai has announced a new recall regarding airbag defects found in Sante Fe models produced between 2007 through 2009 as well as Sonata models that were produced from 2012-2013.

According to Hyundai, 22,512 Sonata midsize sedans are affected by an issue with the side curtain airbags. Hyundai reported concerns of the side curtain airbags spontaneously deploying, startling the drivers and interfering with driver visibility. Hyundai's report did not recognize the number of incidents or injuries caused by the alarming defect.

Next, 199,118 units of the Sante Fe SUV are recalled due to an occupant classification system defect. While the Sonata deploys without warning, the Sante Fe risks not deploying at all. A fault in the front seat detection system may cause the vehicle to not recognize the presence of a small adult. In the event of a collision, the passenger side airbag may fail to deploy at all. Hyundai has not reported on the number of injuries related to this defect.

The South Korean automaker offers to replace the side curtain airbags of all affected Sonata sedans while the Sante Fe will receive a software update for the detection system. Both services will be free of charge at a Hyundai dealer.
