An alleged 16-year-old kidnapping victim from New York City admitted to authorities on Tuesday that she had staged the whole Bronx kidnapping incident up with her friends so she could get away from her strict mother. The incident happened on Monday when four men forced the teenage girl into a car in front of her petrified mom.

The interrogation of Karol Sanchez took place at the 40th Precinct stationhouse on Tuesday, after she had turned up right where she had been “abducted” the night before. During the interrogation, Sanchez admitted that the four men caught on video were her friends and that she had only decided to reappear after realizing that their stunt had turned into a headline-grabbing incident.

“It was staged,” said the source. “Once they realized what they did, with the Amber Alert on their phones, it was like, ‘Oh, s—t, we got a problem,” the source added. Sanchez’s mom reportedly wanted to relocate their family back to her native Honduras but Karol did not want to go, so she decided to escape by staging the kidnapping incident. It remains unknown if the four men caught on the surveillance video would be charged.

On Monday night, the authorities released a 10-second shocking video of the Bronx kidnapping, showing a beige sedan pilling up to Sanchez and her mother as they were walking along the Melrose block. Four men who appeared to be in their 20s then got out of the car, snatching the girl and jostling her mom to the ground. The video immediately prompted a massive search for Sanchez.

A resident who witnessed the Bronx kidnapping said the incident had left Sanchez’s mom hysterical on the sidewalk. “I heard screeching of tires,” recounted Damon Doughty. “I went to the window and when I got there, there were three people in a car and the guy in the backseat was kicking the mom out of the backseat. Then they grabbed the daughter back into the car because it looked like she tried to get away. Then the car sped off. She ran and she was screaming. She was just screaming and yelling,” he added.
