A Nigerian man who hacked his girlfriend to death with a machete for breaking his iPhone 11pro max revealed that he was under the influence of hard drugs at the time of the incident at Etevie quarters in Ozoro on Saturday, July 16, 2022.
The 23-year-old suspect, identified as Godspower Adegheji, was arrested for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, 22-year-old Gift Oloku, a student of the Delta State Polytechnic in Ozoro.
Police say the suspect stabbed his girlfriend with a machete after she accidentally broke his iPhone during a scuffle.
The suspect said the murder was the ‘biggest mistake’ of his life and that he was under the influence of drugs when he committed the crime.
"It was a mistake, this is the biggest mistake of my life. We have a son together, I never imagined I would kill my girlfriend. I really do not know how what came over me," the suspect told Daily Independent, while he was being paraded at the Police Headquarters.
According to local media reports, the couple got into a heated argument Saturday night when the suspect accused his girlfriend of infidelity after she went out without telling him.
"I was on drugs that day, I took the drugs because I was angry. She was damaged by iPhone 11 pro max. I also caught her cheating on me then we talked about it but I still had it on my mind."
"Initially, we were fighting and they separated us. I started beating her with a part of my generator when we got inside the house. I hit her with the back of the machete and left her on the balcony while she was still conscious."
"It was when I woke up I found out that she was lying unconscious on the floor that I rushed her to the hospital," the suspect said.
On Sunday morning, the suspect took the body to the State General Hospital where doctors confirmed her dead.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity said: "It happened today (Saturday) at Ozoro. A guy beat his girlfriend to death with a machete. People said he was high and that he didn’t do it with his clear eyes because he didn’t run away after killing her, instead, he rushed her to a general hospital."
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday.
"This is Godspower Adegheji of Etevie quarters Ozoro, age 23yrs, he killed his girlfriend Gift Oloku 'f' aged 22yrs in Ozoro using a machete after she mistakenly broke his iPhone 11pro max while they were fighting cos she went out without telling him. He has been arrested." Edafe said.
"I just confirmed that the girl is a student of the school, but the guy is not. Maybe he has graduated. The guy must have been on drugs last night It was this morning that the guy regained himself. After seeing what he had done, he rushed the girl to the hospital."
