With her more than six decades of dealing with all types of personalities such as heads of states or business titans, Queen Elizabeth II is a pro when it comes to interpersonal interactions. However, there was one royal that Her Majesty once dreaded to meet as doing so would leave her drained and confused.

When Queen Elizabeth II’s firstborn and heir apparent Prince Charles wed Princess Diana in July 1981, it was hailed as the wedding of the century. Covered by the world’s media, it was deemed as a fairytale marriage and the gold standard that every girl looked up to.

However, the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana was not as perfect as everyone thought it was. Even before they married, Princess Diana was already becoming increasingly bored and lonely, wondering why Charles, who had to attend to various engagements, didn’t have time to see her as often as she wanted.

But the wedding still pushed through as everyone thought that Princess Diana would soon adjust to life within the royal family. But even with the birth of Prince William and Prince Harry, the rift between the couple still got worse.

It was at this point that Princess Diana became closer to her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II. It was in Her Majesty that Diana poured out all her problems with Charles. In her book “The Queen And Di: The Untold Story,” author Ingrid Seward narrated a brief dialogue between Her Majesty and a footman, which showed how the monarch tried to calm down Diana’s distress.

“The Princess cried three times in a half an hour while she was waiting to see you,” the footman informed the Queen. “I had her for an hour — and she cried nonstop,” Her Majesty replied.

While Diana came out of these meetings feeling better, they had the opposite effect on Her Majesty. “The Queen came to dread these meetings with her daughter-in-law,” Ingrid wrote.

“They left her feeling drained and despondent and confused — an uncommon state for a woman accustomed to the certainties of her position,” the writer added. As a result, Her Majesty tried to lessen the frequency of her meetings with Diana.
