The wait continues for the sequel of the rebooted “Mortal Kombat” that came out in 2021. Based on the latest updates, development is reportedly underway.

Included in that is the fact that the movie’s original director is reportedly set to return.

In a report from Deadline, Simon McQuoid will be back for the sequel. Also, tasked to script “Mortal Kombat” part 2 will be Jeremy Slater.

Slater will be replacing Greg Russo and David Callaham, the duo behind the original script of the first installment of the rebooted “Mortal Kombat.”

For those who saw the first part of the rebooted film, it will be recalled that towards the ending that a fan favorite appeared in Johnny Cage.

Cage was not part of the first installment but it appears the stage is set for him to pop up in the sequel. Further, it will be recalled that Russo had previously mentioned that the rebooted “Mortal Kombat” would be the first film in a trilogy.

It was on April 2021 when “Mortal Kombat” came out with McQuoid as director. It was also released on HBO Max and was no. 1 at the box office. This made the reboot of HBO Max’s most successful film launch to date.

The release also weathered adversity since it launched amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The reception came as a huge surprise to New Line executives, a reason why staging a sequel gained ground.

The rebooted “Mortal Kombat” focuses on the life of Lewis Tan (Cole Young). The cage fighter ends up getting caught in the conflict between Earthrealm and Outworld.

Young heads a team of warriors preparing for a centuries-old tournament, guided by realm protector, the thunder god in Raiden. Other notable characters who appeared include Sub-Zero, Jax, Sonya Blade and Liu Kang among others.

As of this writing, “Mortal Kombat 2” has yet to get an official release date.
