A Russian mother allegedly poured petrol into her eight-year-old son’s mouth and then set him on fire after he told her husband she had another lover.

The boy suffered 45 percent burns. He breathed his last in a hospital in Kursk, Russia.

The woman, Anastasia Baulina, a cashier, was angry as she felt that her son Andrey "betrayed" her by telling his stepfather about her alleged lover's visit, reported Daily Mail.

It is alleged that she had a "quarrel" with her son and took him to the courtyard where she doused him in fuel and then set the boy on fire.

According to a report, she poured the fuel into the boy's mouth. Before using a lighter, she told him, "Let's see how it will burn."

The victim's sister Natasha, 12, witnessed the horrific act. The terrified girl said, "[The fuel] was pouring into his mouth, as he was crying."

Later, the mother and stepfather Pavel, a farmworker, stopped the fire and called an ambulance. But it was too late as the boy was critically injured. He died two days later.

Neighbour Nina Chetverikova said, "I saw her at the bus stop. She had a quarrel with her husband. It seems she took it out on her children."

The mother, who hails from Zheleznogorsk district, has been detained and a murder investigation is on. She can be in prison for up to 20 years if convicted. A criminal investigation was also launched to find out why the child was brought back to his mother's care as he was earlier removed from her and was in an orphanage.
