Since July 5, 1946, women have been hitting the beaches in bikinis. To commemorate the date enjoy our favorite swimwear picks. MUO

Every year we commemorate the invention of bikini by Parisian fashion designer, Louis Reard. The revealing two-piece bathing suit made its debut in Paris in 1946, but was named after Bikini Atoll Island where the United States conducted atomic tests. The U.S started accepting the garment until the 1960s because it was considered indecent.

Fashion designer Jacques Heim, also from Paris, re-released a similar design earlier that same year, the Atome. Due to its controversial and revealing design, the bikini was banned in many countries. Slowly the bikini became a part of pop culture when film stars like Brigitte Bardot and Ursula Andress began wearing them on public beaches and in film.

By the early 2000s, bikinis had become a US$811 million business annually, and boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and sun tanning.
