A Michigan Republican who is running for a state House seat has come under fire for the advice he allegedly gave his daughters when rape is inevitable.

Robert “RJ” Regan has drawn backlash from party leaders on Tuesday when he said that he told his daughters to “lie back and enjoy it” during a Facebook live stream that was aired on Sunday, Mar. 5.

Regan made the comments while telling another participant that it was not too late to decertify the 2020 presidential election.

“Well, if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it,” the Republican shared as to what he tells his daughters if they would be in such a situation.

However, it was not the only statement that placed the Kent County candidate under fire.

Like most, Regan also gave his comments on the Russian-Ukraine crisis, saying that it was a fake war just like a fake pandemic. This resulted in a series of Anti-Semitic social media posts, the Times of Israel reported.

“We are better than this as a party and I absolutely expect better than this of our candidates,” State Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiserf said, branding the recent comments of Regan as beyond the pale.

However, other lawmakers admonished Regan for his statements.

“His statements about Russia’s unprovoked attack of a sovereign country are contrary to our own nation’s values, and his antisemitic [sic] posts claiming Jewish people control the banks and were behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks are shameful and disgusting,” Sen. Mark Huizenga said.

Regan’s comments after one of his daughters urged the community not to vote for him.

“if you’re in Michigan and 18+ pls for the love of god do not vote for my dad for state rep. tell everyone,” Stephen Regan tweeted in 2020. “I don’t feel safe rn sharing further information regarding his beliefs, but please look him up and just read for yourself.”

Meanwhile, netizens blasted him for his remarks and Ron Weiser, a former U.S. ambassador to Slovakia, summed it up nicely.

“Mr. Regan’s history of foolish, egregious and offensive comments, including his most recent one are simply beyond the pale,” Weiser said in a statement. “We are better than this as a Party and I absolutely expect better than this of our candidates.”
