When Matisse hits the stage for Amazon Music's City Sessions on August 13, it won't just be another show. The Mexican trio behind some of Latin pop's most emotional ballads has built a set they swear will never be repeated a "you had to be there" moment for fans tuning in live on Twitch and TikTok.
"It's going to be special," Pablo says during an interview of the band with The Latin Times. "Only the people watching that night will see it. We'll never do it again."
Among the surprises? A salsa version of Mis Ojos Lloran Por Ti, but don't expect it to hit streaming anytime soon. "We just thought, why not try it for this show? It's going to sound amazing with the band we're bringing," Melissa says. "You'll only hear it this once."
The Group Chat Energy Is Real
Spending time with Matisse feels like joining a long-running group chat. They jump from teasing each other to swapping pop culture confessions without missing a beat.
Melissa sheepishly admits she just finished Friends this summer. "I didn't know Ross and Rachel had a kid! Now I know about Emma. I'm finally part of pop culture," she laughs.
Pablo, however, has drawn a hard line. "I've never seen Harry Potter and I never will. I hate magic. I hate magicians," he says, dead serious. "I just don't trust anyone who can make things disappear."
Román smirks. "You're not scared of clowns, but you're scared of magicians?"
"Exactly," Pablo shoots back.
Sharing the Stage with Paloma Morphy
For City Sessions, Matisse won't be alone. They're bringing along rising Mexican artist Paloma Morphy, whose voice they describe as fearless and fresh. "It's fun to share the stage with someone who's just starting to blow up," says Melissa. "It keeps us inspired."
The set will also be bigger than usual, the band is expanding from their regular six-piece to around ten musicians for the night. "We wanted to make this feel like a once-in-a-lifetime concert," Pablo explains.
"I can't believe how everything is working out for me and my music. Being part of the City Sessions is something beyond my dreams", told us Paloma Morphy.
New Music, New Perspectives
This summer has been a busy one for Matisse. In July, they released a collaboration with Grupo Arriesgado and their own version of Mis Ojos Lloran Por Ti, the original arrangement, not the salsa twist they're saving for the livestream. And right after City Sessions, they'll drop Martes, a reflective track about the passage of time and the nostalgia of childhood.
"It's about that moment when you realize you're not a kid anymore," Pablo says. "One day you stop riding your bike with friends, and you don't even notice it's the last time."
The song's video features childhood photos of the band. Melissa's favorite? "The one where I'm holding my dog. People say it's my old dog reincarnated into my current one. Maybe they're right."
Where to Watch
Matisse's City Sessions show streams on August 13 at 8 p.m. Mexico / 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT on Twitch (Amazon Music En Vivo) and TikTok (Amazon Music Latin). It'll run about an hour, and if you miss it, you won't get a second chance.
"We love when someone invites us to make music from a different angle," Pablo says. "This is our playground for one night."
