A shocking development in analysis related to coronavirus cases in New York has revealed that more than two-thirds of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were “predominantly” at home and not moving around.

The statistics were revealed by the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a press conference on Wednesday. The numbers are based on a survey that revealed that two-thirds of COVID-19 patients hospitalized got infected despite not traveling or going out for work. They were just staying at home.

The survey required 113 hospitals to note where the patients had been staying before they contracted COVID-19 and landed up at the hospital with severe symptoms. The analysis of the survey revealed that more than 66 percent of the affected people were staying at home, followed by 18 percent from nursing homes, and 4 percent from assisted-living facilities.

Nearly 8 percent of them were classified as “others” and less than 1 percent came from prison or jail.

"We were thinking that maybe we were going to find a higher percentage of essential employees who were getting sick because they were going to work — that these may be nurses, doctors, transit workers. That's not the case. They were predominantly at home," Cuomo said during the briefing.

The statistics, however, do not seem surprising considering the background of the people who were hospitalized. Out of the total people, only 17 percent were employed. A large majority (46%) was from the unemployed category, while 37 percent were retirees.

Therefore, it seems logical that a majority of the people who landed up at the hospital were staying at home when they were diagnosed.

Cuomo adds that personal behavior is one major factor in preventing coronavirus infection, considering the statistics that people staying at home are being diagnosed with COVID-19 in such large numbers.

He says that the U.S. government has done everything possible to control the spread of COVID-19 and that there is a complete lockdown. However, it is up to people to take all measures to prevent themselves and their families from COVID-19.
