A New York woman was caught trying to dispose of a bag of blood-soaked clothes following the brutal torture and killing of her son's girlfriend in their apartment building's stairwell.

A 54-year-old woman, believed to be the suspect's mother, contacted police on Tuesday, claiming she had discovered a 21-year-old woman covered in stab wounds in the stairwell of a Bronx apartment building.

When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from severe injuries, including large lacerations, razor marks, puncture wounds, and signs that she may have been tied up and beaten with a hammer, according to the New York Post. She was rushed to a nearby medical center where she was pronounced dead.

Police initially treated the woman as a witness but law enforcement grew suspicious after they discovered a trail of blood leading from a room in her apartment to the stairwell where the victim was found. Inside her home, officers also found a garbage bag filled with blood-soaked clothing. Sources told police they had seen the woman attempting to dispose of the bag, according to the Post.

Although authorities have not yet confirmed her direct involvement in the killing, the suspect's mother may face charges related to evidence tampering.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured the victim's boyfriend leaving the apartment around the time of the incident. He remains at large and is currently considered a person of interest in the case.
