Parents' Murder-Suicide: Three-Year-Old Kept Herself And Baby Brother Alive pixabay

A couple and their two sons were found dead in their home in Chester County in an apparent murder suicide. Authorities said Deepak Kulkarni, 50, his wife, Arti Adya Kulkarni, 47, were found dead along with their sons Shubham, 14, and Sharvil, 7, in the basement Sunday. The county coroner reported the family had died from gunshot wounds.

West Whiteland Police Detective Scott Pezick said it is still unclear who was behind the slayings however, according to a report from The Philadelphia Inquirer, the husband had purchased a gun two weeks before their bodies were discovered.

Law enforcement said they were called over to the family’s rented townhouse in a subdivision behind the Exton Regional Rail train station around noon on Sunday. Arti Kulkami’s siblings, who live in New Jersey, came over for a visit as they grew concerned not hearing from the family in several days. When their knocks went unanswered, they called the police.

The officers were able to get inside the home using a garage-door opener from one of the family’s vehicles and found the lifeless bodies of the family in the basement.

In a story on the New York Post, Arti’s brother, Anand Adya, said he had noticed red flags in the months leading up to their deaths. He said the family canceled plans at the last minute several times .

“I would ask Arti if everything is OK, and she would never say anything,” Adya said.

“It was obvious, she wanted to meet, but he didn’t let us”, he added.

Deepak Kulkarni was employed as a software analyst at Education Management Systems, while his wife also worked in the same field as an application developer for the University of Pennsylvania.

According to a neighbor who lives two doors down from the family, Deepak took daily walks and was usually quite friendly and chatty. However, the last time he was seen several days ago, he seemed “not his usual self”.

District Attorney Deborah Ryan said in a statement Monday :

“This is a tragedy beyond comprehension because two children and both their parents are dead. These were members of our community. We will do everything in our power to learn why this horrific incident happened”, Ryan said

She also urged “anyone who needs support to contact the National Suicide Prevention hotline at 1-800-273-8255.”
