A student at a Pittsburgh-area high school went on a stabbing rampage. Officials said that four victims were flown to area hospitals. Twenty people were injured. A student at the school is the suspected attacker and is said to be in police custody, said Dan Stevens, deputy emergency management coordinator for the Westmoreland County. Dan Stevens also said, “Most of the injuries are stab wounds to the extremities.”

The attacks occurred in several classrooms and hallways at the beginning of what seemed to be a normal day at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville. The first 911 call was received at 7:13 a.m. today. Chris Kauffman, Forbes Regional Hospital director of trauma said, “These are significant injuries,” adding that two patients were undergoing surgery and a third was heading into the emergency room.

Stevens wanted to parents to know that the students that were there were safe. He stated, “It’s important that parents realize the scene is contained, the students that are here are safe.”

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett issued a statement this morning and said, “I was shocked and saddened upon learning of the events that occurred this morning as students arrived at Franklin Regional High School. As a parent and grandparent, I can think of nothing more distressing than senseless violence against children. My heart and prayers go out to all the victims and their families. I have directed the Pennsylvania State Police to assist local law enforcement in its investigation in any way possible. Other state resources will be made available to the community, if needed. I assure the citizens of Murrysville that they have the full support of my administration.”
