Princess Diana and Prince Charles ended their marriage because of infidelity. Their divorce was widely covered, mainly because of the prince’s extramarital affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. The scandal further escalated when the princess admitted later on that she also fell in love with another man, named James Hewitt, a cavalry officer.

While there were probably other reasons that led to the breakdown of their marriage, Prince Charles’ cheating was the final blow that shattered his family. Princess Diana talked about her husband’s affair with Camilla in a tell-all interview with BBC’s “Panorama” in 1995, and she disclosed intimate details about her failed marriage.

It was in that interview where she infamously told the interviewer, Martin Bashir, that her union with the prince was kind of cramped since there were more than two people in it. “There were three of us in this marriage,” Princess Diana told Bashir. “So it was a bit crowded.”

Princess Diana calmly explained everything in that interview, and she didn’t even bother to check the questions beforehand since she already knew what would be discussed. Despite looking very hurt and mentioning them in the interview, she didn’t directly lash out on Prince Charles and Camilla, but her fury was revealed later via the love letters she sent to Hewitt while he was away in the Gulf War.

According to Express, royal biographer Anna Pasternak claimed that she was able to read all of Princess Diana’s letters to her lover. In her published book titled “Princess In Love,” Pasternak shared that she discovered many heartbreaking details in the secret missives. And in one of the notes, the princess allegedly divulged how she felt about Prince Charles’ love for Camilla, and she was extremely furious.

“These billets-doux, which formed the basis of my book, were loving and sentimental,” the publication quoted Pasternak as saying. “They showed Diana at the zenith of her affair, grateful for Hewitt’s compassion. It was agonizing to read how needy and sad Diana was.”

The author went on to say that Princess Diana was craving for attention and recognition from her husband and Buckingham Palace for her charity works but was disappointed that she was snubbed instead. All that the princess felt was jealousy toward her because of the popularity she had worldwide, and she was truly hurt by the fact that Queen Elizabeth likes Camilla.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles officially divorced in 1996, and she sadly died in a car crash the following year. Her ex-husband, who is the next in line to the throne, went on to marry Camilla in 2005, after the scandalous love affair that rocked the British monarchy.
