Republican Sen. Rand Paul slammed a reported security guarantee from the Trump administration to Ukraine as part of a proposed peace deal to end the war with Russia.

"Not sure how America First became promising to defend Ukraine for 15 years?" Paul said in a social media publication, which he followed with the hashtag "notourwar:"

Paul included a link to an article by The Associated Press, which reported that the U.S. is offering the European country security guarantees for 15 years. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, said he would prefer the guarantees extended for 50 years to deter Russia from potentially invading the country again.

Trump hosted Zelenskyy at his Mar-a-Lago residence on Sunday, claiming that the two countries are "closer than ever before" to reaching an agreement. The outlet noted that negotiators are still far on certain issues, including withdrawal from different areas and the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently occupied by Moscow.

Before Zelenskyy met with Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Trump on Monday and claimed that Ukraine conducted a drone attack targeting one of his official residences, adding that Moscow would evaluate its negotiating position based on the incident.

Trump told press he was "very angry" about the attack, adding that it was one thing to "be offensive" and another one to "attack his house." Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Russian air defenses destroyed 91 long-range drones directed at the residence, located in the Novgorod region.

Lavrov didn't provide evidence for the claim but said Moscow has selected targets for retaliatory strikes.

Kyiv, in contrast, is saying Russia is lying to undermine the negotiations and "justify additional attacks against Ukraine."
