A Republican senator is expressing concern about President Donald Trump's decision to hold a dinner and a White House tour with top holders of his memecoin.
Concretely, Cynthia Lummis, from Wyoming, said that even though she is a staunch supporter of Trump's she is "willing to say that this gives me pause," NBC News reported. The senator is promoting a bill to regulate cryptocurrencies. She said on Wednesday that Congress should regulate standards around digital assets.
"This is the Wild West, and so when I hear things like this, my reaction is, we need to legislate so there are rules," she said.
The website of Trump's memecoin, $TRUMP, announced last week that the top 220 holders of the crypto could attend an "intimate private dinner" at his golf club outside Washington D.C. in May.
Moreover, the top 25 holders of the coin will also get a "VIP White House Tour," the next day. The currency jumped more than 50% after the announcement.
CBS News noted after the announcement that Trump's attendance isn't guaranteed, with an NFT offered as compensation if he cancels.
Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski also conveyed discomfort with the development, telling the outlet "I don't think it would be appropriate for me to charge people to come into the Capitol and take a tour." "He's got to remember that he's living there, but it's the people's house, right?" she added.
