Smithfield donated 50,000 pounds of protein to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank on Wednesday, March 23. This donation was to help ensure that food-insecure individuals and families in the Los Angeles area have a protein-rich meal for the upcoming Easter holiday. Joining Smithfield for this donation, celebrity chef Ingrid Hoffmann was present to discuss the importance of providing assistance to our neighbors in need, and help raise the awareness of food insecurity across the country.

Hoffmann was there for on- site interviews regarding the significance of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes program, the donation to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, and her partnership with Smithfield including some creative ways to enjoy ham at Easter.

This significant donation is part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes initiative, the company’s coast-to-coast program to help families and individuals become more food secure. Since founding this program in 2008, Smithfield has donated more than 38 million servings of protein to food banks, after-school nutrition programs, and natural- disaster relief nationwide.

While the unemployment rate has begun to drop and more jobs are created, millions of Americans still struggle with food insecurity. According to Feeding America, more than 48 million Americans, including 15 million children, are food insecure and unsure where their next meal will come from. Food assistance organizations across the country report that individuals and families are turning to them for assistance.
