A 31-year-old U.S. Army soldier was killed Sunday night after his 13-year-old stepson allegedly shot him multiple times with the latter’s handgun. It appears this stemmed from an earlier altercation involving the soldier and the boy’s mother.

Pronounced dead at the scene was Sgt 1st Class Allan Edwards who was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the La Mirada Apartments located in the 10500 block of McCombs Street in El Paso. The 13-year-old was taken into custody and remanded to the Juvenile Probation Department. However, he has yet to be charged with anything in connection with the shooting of Edwards.

According to KFox14, the boy had witnessed Edwards assaulting his mother hours earlier and away from home. When they got home, the couple were arguing again and the boy allegedly went on to grab the 31-year-old’s handgun and shot his stepfather.

"Once back at the residence the juvenile armed himself with a handgun belonging to Edwards. When the couple again began to argue the juvenile produced the handgun and shot Edwards," an official police news release stated.

Edwards is from Tennessee and joined the US Army in 2008. He has been at Fort Bliss since March 2014 according to the El Paso Times. He is a Division Master Gunner with the 1st Armored Division per his Facebook profile.

“Sgt. 1st Class Allan Edwards gave 100 percent daily to the team and his profession; his technical knowledge enhanced the capability of the division operations section,” Colonel Bryan Frizzelle, assistant chief of staff of operations in the 1st Armored Division stated.

It appears that Edwards and the boy’s mother were married only a year ago. That bond produced a baby daughter last July. The case is still ongoing and the official charges that may be filed against the 13-year-old could be known soon. Edwards becomes the second Fort Bliss soldier who died over the weekend in El Paso.
