The Los Angeles Dodgers were playing solid baseball entering the 2013 National League Championship Series with the St. Louis Cardinals. Disposing of the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series, Los Angeles appeared to be in position to advance to the club's first World Series since 1988 where the Dodgers - then managed by Tommy Lasorda - took down the Oakland Athletics in 5 games. After dropping the first two games of the National League Championship Series however, current L.A. manager Don Mattingly will need to find a way to rejuvenate an offense that has been dominated by Cardinals pitching, scoring just two runs in the first two meetings despite the fact that Dodger pitching has been superb.
"I mean, our guys can pitch," Mattingly said. "We look at what they've been able to do to us, but we've been pretty good, too. They're not exactly going out and throwing six or eight runs up on us. It's a matter of us getting the outs when you need them and being able to get that key hit. This series, up to this point, we haven't gotten the key hit. We weren't able to put the run up when we needed it. If we get two key hits over the last two days, we win two. We're walking out of here up 2-0. It didn't happen, so we're walking out of here down two."
While Los Angeles has struggled to complete the big outs and knock in crucial runs, the St. Louis Cardinals are certainly pleased with their start to the series. Headlined by two phenomenal pitching performances from Joe Kelly and rising star Michael Wacha, the Cardinals were able to open up a crucial series lead at home. Ace Adam Wainwright - who will get the start in the next game - knows the task of taking down the Dodgers at home won't be easy, especially since the Dodger faithful at Chavez Ravine will be ready to go come first pitch.
"Thinking back, I know it's going to be rocking tomorrow," Wainwright said. "I don't know how many people are here, but it's a lot of fans, bigger than most stadiums and very loud. I love that though. The louder the better. That plays right into my hands."
Wainwright will be opposed by L.A.'s rising rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu, a 26-year-old left hander who went 14-8 in 2013 with a 3.00 ERA and 154 strikeouts.
