“Star Trek” actor has called it quits with his wife of 18 years, Elizabeth Shatner. The veteran actor reportedly came up with the decision after realizing he wanted to live life as a single man again. He also cited “irreconcilable differences” as one of the reasons for their divorce.

William and Elizabeth got hitched on Feb. 13, 2001, marking William’s fourth marriage. According to reports, the duo’s divorce would be “quick and complicated,” as the couple signed a prenup when they tied the knot 18 years ago. With such an agreement in place, neither William nor Elizabeth will receive support from each other after their divorce.

As of now, William and Elizabeth are still in the early stages of their divorce process. When reached for a statement, Elizabeth said her brother had just died so she would like to just spend some private time with her family “during this time of grief.” “Respect distance from divorce topic while we grieve my brother respectfully,” she told reporters.

At this point in the process, William and Elizabeth are still negotiating financial terms. But since spousal support and child support won’t be an issue because of their prenup agreement and lack of children, fans of the couple can expect their marriage to be officially over in a relatively short amount of time. William is being represented by his lawyer, Laura Wasser, who also previously represented Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian.

While reports about their divorce didn’t come out until earlier this week, rumor has it that the couple’s marital woes have been around since the beginning of the year. In fact, when William filed paperwork against Elizabeth to put an end to their marriage, he listed Feb. 1, 2019 as their official separation date.

Meanwhile, news about William and Elizabeth’s divorce came as a shock for fans who thought Elizabeth would be William’s last love. Back in 2014, the 88-year-old actor gushed over his wife during an interview, saying he was captivated by her beauty and many other qualities.

“Elizabeth has a great sense of humor and a great sense of adventure and she’s very nurturing,” said William Shatner. “That combination of beauty, style, intelligence, humor, and loving horses and dogs and children and loving her home and making a home for us, is quite a combination,” he added.
