The body of a 17-year-old girl believed to have died from a gunshot wound was found at a cemetery in Georgia on Sunday.

The body was found by a visitor who was visiting the burial site near Barnesville. Officers received a call from that person that discovered the body at the Highfalls Park Road across from Unionville Church in Lamar County. The body was found at around 2:30 p.m.

"We had a family here that was visiting with their family in the graveyard and they saw the body and then they immediately backed up and called 911," a Lamar County officer said.

The slain teenage girl was reportedly African-American and believed to be from the Atlanta area. Her name remains undisclosed as authorities await the victim’s family, the Associated Press reported. Per initial findings, the girl suffered at least one gunshot wound.

Based on the initial finding, investigators believe that the body was not in the cemetery for very long before it was discovered. Officers are clueless at the time of the death of the teenage girl. It is also possible that the girl was shot and killed at a different location and then left at the burial site.

A better explanation behind the cause of death of the 17-year-old girl should be known soon. The body of the teenager was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations crime lab for an autopsy. The cemetery remains a crime scene for now.

In related news, local authorities are also seeking help in identifying another young girl who was found dead in woodland in Oregon last Dec. 31.

The child was believed to be between 6 ½ to 10 years old. She was found near a rest stop over in Lincoln County. The girl was described as someone who had long dark brown or black hair and stood between 3-feet-10 inches and 4-feet-6 inches tall.
